Challenging Thoughts for Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018

We are not sent primarily to be missionaries, pastors, teachers

or any other kind of worker.

It isn’t the office I hold that signifies my service,

but the way in which my heavenly Father is glorified

in the common things of my life.

There are little “nobodies” scattered around the world,

whose lives radiate and glorify God,

whose daily doings bring joy to the angels of heaven––

and yet in the eyes of this world they are still nobodies.

The Bible is largely the story of the call of deliverers.

God cannot endure that unfestive, mirthless attitude of ours

in which we eat our bread in sorrow,

with pretentious, busy haste, or even with shame.

Through our daily meals He is calling us to rejoice,

to keep holiday in the midst of our working day.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

I think we all sin

by needlessly disobeying the apostolic injunction to “rejoice”

as much as by anything else.

The trouble with many people

is that they have got just enough religion to make them miserable.

If there is not joy in religion,

you have got a leak in your religion.

Billy Sunday
