55 BC Julius Caesar fails to conquer Britannia.

43 AD Emperor Claudius successfully conquers the isle.

410 The Roman legions are leaving. Jutes, Angles, and Saxons, all Germanic tribes,                      invade Britannia. It will be called England (the land of the Angles).

793 Lindisfarne is the first monastery to be raided by the Vikings (the word means                        “pirate”)

1066 The French from Normandy, under William the Conqueror, invade England and will                stay. The Saxon language mixed with French will be the English language.
